SOFT LIFE SKI
Soft Life Ski is a collective redefining what it means to take up space on the slopes, from a cultural perspective. Rooted in joy, community and advocacy of 'soft living', they bring Black energy and perspective to an environment often seen through a single lens. Their gatherings are as much about connection and celebration as they are about skiing itself, creating spaces where freedom and expression thrive.
After taking a leap of faith myself to try a new adventure, I created Joy Over Resistance, a short film that captures the essence of the SLS experience in the Swiss Alps. Set against the stillness of the mountains, the film contrasts high-energy dance and expression with quiet serenity. Through carefully paced visuals and immersive sound design that draws on wind, snow and voices, the piece recreates the feeling of presence and peace.
The title speaks to joy as a conscious choice. More than resistance, it reflects culture, celebration and freedom in its purest form.
ELEMENTS OF PURE JOY
This work is grounded in emotional narrative architecture, with joy as its foundation. In the film, joy takes many shapes: the still hum of the mountains, the rhythm of voices, the energy of dance, the intimacy of shared moments. Each element stands on its own, but together they form a complete story.
There is also the joy of witnessing a new landscape. Looking out at the vastness of the Alps brought a quiet realisation of wonder, the kind of joy found in simply being present to what is before your eyes. That delight is echoed in the vibrancy of the party scenes, where energy rises and collective celebration takes over.
In that contrast of serenity and expression, stillness and movement, the film becomes a reminder that joy can be both intimate and expansive, a structure we build and share together.
